Keyboard Shortcuts Reference

All keyboard shortcuts in Conjure are configurable. This page lists the available shortcut actions and common default bindings.

Configuring Shortcuts

Navigate to Settings > Input > Hotkey shortcuts to view and change all keyboard shortcuts. Click on any shortcut to record a new key combination.

No defaults for some shortcuts

"Speak selected text" and "Switch writing style" have no default hotkey. You must configure them manually in Settings > Input > Hotkey shortcuts.

Choosing Hotkeys

  • Right Ctrl -- easily reachable, doesn't conflict with most shortcuts
  • Caps Lock -- convenient location, rarely needed as a caps lock
  • F13-F24 -- dedicated keys on extended keyboards, no conflicts
  • Right Alt -- another option, though some apps use Alt for menus

Keys to Avoid

  • Left Ctrl / Left Alt -- these modify other shortcuts (Ctrl+C, Alt+Tab) and can cause conflicts
  • Alt on Windows -- Alt alone activates the menu bar in many Windows apps, which interferes with push-to-talk

Hotkey conflicts

Avoid Alt-based shortcuts on Windows as they trigger application menu bars. Use single non-modifier keys (Right Ctrl, Caps Lock) or function keys instead.

  • Modifier combinations -- Ctrl+Shift+X style hotkeys can conflict with application shortcuts and cause issues with push-to-talk (releasing the modifiers while the hotkey is held triggers system shortcuts)

Tips

  • Push-to-talk works best with a single, non-modifier key (like Right Ctrl or Caps Lock) since you hold it the entire time you speak
  • Toggle mode is more forgiving of key choice since you only tap it briefly
  • If your hotkey conflicts with an application, try a different key rather than fighting the conflict
  • Global hotkeys work even when Conjure is not the focused window -- that's the entire point

System-Level Hotkey Notes

Windows

Conjure registers global hotkeys that work across all applications. Some considerations:

  • Windows key combinations are reserved by the OS and cannot be used
  • Alt+F4, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and other system-level shortcuts cannot be overridden
  • Media keys (play/pause, volume) can be used but may affect media players

Linux

Global hotkey behavior depends on your desktop environment:

  • GNOME/KDE -- most keys work, but some desktop shortcuts may take precedence
  • Wayland -- requires additional permissions for global key capture in some compositors
  • X11 -- standard XGrabKey capture, reliable for most key combinations
